We are proud to present a solo exhibition of new and recent work by south London-based artist Robbie Fife. This twice-postponed exhibition will showcase new paintings and monotypes made during and beyond the lockdown period, which continue Robbie’s exploration of imagined worlds that exist under the surface. Sticks, roots, kists, the bellies of icebergs, fishing nets and Greenland sharks all appear in these paintings as phenomena that could have been left behind or buried.
Whilst the paintings speak of stories, they are not wholly preconceived but emerge through the manipulation of paint, which is layered and reworked until a seemingly ‘right’ composition arises. The accrual of mistakes is therefore vital in my decision-making. I want my paintings to feel like they have been built over time and that their surface patina gives evidence of that longer duration.
