Alice Macdonald, Garden Bowl, 2023
Glazed earthenware, 12 x 26 x 27cm
Emerging artist Alice Macdonald’s artistic practice is informed by a broad range of influences including historical literature, memories, and fairytales. As well as painting from classic films on-screen, she works directly from life, drawing from the human figure and studying the tangle of flora in her grandmother's garden in Oxfordshire.
The malleable qualities of working in ceramic relate closely to the expressive, dynamic painting style for which Alice is best known. The resulting works - including painted bowls, and piggy-topped butter dishes– are gently surreal, with a sense of the theatrical. This ‘Garden Bowl’ has a terracotta-coloured base and is the largest of these new pieces by the artist. Decorated with vibrant flowers it playfully references the blue and white palette used in Chinese decorative pottery.
All of Alice's hand-made ceramic works are signed, glazed, and food-safe. They should not be put in the microwave or dishwasher. Please note that we are offering central or south east London collection only for all purchased ceramics by Alice, to ensure that they reach each purchaser safely.
Alice studied at Falmouth University (2011- 2014) followed by the Royal Drawing School (2016 - 2017). She has undertaken several artistic residencies in locations including India, Italy and Scotland. She has exhibited her work widely in the UK in group exhibitions including the Denton's Art Prize, London (2021), the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts (several years) and 'Dream Baby Dream', presented by Paint Talk at Fitzrovia Gallery (2022). She was awarded the Great Art Prize, given at the National Original Print Exhibition, 2017 and the RWS Young Artist Award at the Royal Watercolour Society Open, Bankside Gallery, London. Oliver Projects has launched new prints by Alice at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the past two years.
