Bobbye Fermie, By the End of the Evening, 2023

£495.00

Oil-based monotype, 28 x 37.5cm (unframed)

Amsterdam-born artist Bobbye Fermie is renowned for her dreamlike works on paper that explore introspective female figures inhabiting imaginary spaces. Inspired by memories and photographs, her work is characterised by a limited palette which creates impact and lends each image a graphic quality.

In early 2023 Bobbye began to explore printmaking using two very different techniques; woodcut and monotype. The result is her first cohesive series of prints titled 'Tales of the Home', which Oliver Projects has been proud to launch exclusively online. In these prints, Bobbye has continued to investigate the lives of her solitary female figures going about their business in domestic scenarios.

This monotype has been made with oil-based ink which provides denser colour than water-based mediums. It is created in shades of blue and red which the artist has chosen for this series, in her words, ‘instinctively’. As in much of Bobbye’s imagery, the scene has a sense of the theatrical, featuring a leading lady. Areas of the paper have been left without ink creating areas of light and silhouetted forms, adding to the drama of the scene.

Bobbye studied in the Netherlands and Belgium before moving to London in 2014 to attend the Royal Drawing School. She has undertaken artistic residencies in the UK and Italy and her work has been featured in several publications. She has exhibited widely in the UK and her work is currently held at several collections, including the Morritz-Heyman Collection, The Royal Collection and Soho House. She lives and works in north London.
