Joseph Goody, Primary, 2024
Oil on canvas, 130.5 x 105cm
Joseph Goody’s abstract imagery is inspired by – in his words – ‘literature, castle walls, parapets and ideas of organisation’. Meticulously composed, his works have historically explored geometric forms and layering with a softness that creates a sense of tension.
This portrait-orientation painting was included in 'Shaping Time', a joint exhibition of work by Joseph and Coco Crampton presented at Sims Reed Gallery, London (11 - 27 September 2024). It is part of a body of new unique works which see the artist exploring new territory; his imagery has begun to feel dramatically different, with a greater sense of complexity.
This large-scale painting is unusual amongst this group of works in that much of the surface of the canvas is covered in a rich blue. Two of the other primary colours referred to in the work's title are revealed through five 'windows' in the composition, where we are given a view through at what lies beneath. In Joseph's words:
‘These more complex paintings reflect a multiplicity of moments. Each time I’d return to a work, it would be with the intention of moving forwards towards something new.' We are proud to show this painting at the 2025 London Art Fair where we can be found on Stand 2 (21 - 26 January).
Joseph graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2011 and won the Neville Burston Award for Painting. He continued his studies at the Royal Drawing School where he won The Patrons Club Prize in 2012. Sid Motion Gallery, London, presented a solo exhibition of paintings in 2020 and Cob Gallery, London, have also exhibited his work regularly. Oliver Projects has shown Joseph’s works at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2021, 2023 and 2024) in ‘Almost Blue’ at the RWS Gallery (May 2024), and at Sims Reed Gallery in a collaborative exhibition ‘Shaping Time’ in September 2024. Joseph lives and works in south east London.
