Acrylic on paper, 35 x 22cm

Joseph Goody’s abstract imagery is inspired by – in his words – ‘literature, castle walls, parapets and ideas of organisation’. Meticulously composed, his paintings, collages and limited edition prints explore geometric forms and layering with a softness that creates a sense of tension.

These new acrylic paintings on paper continue to use the distinctive colour palette and dialogue between abstraction and architectural figuration that characterise Joseph’s painting practice. However, in this new body of work, linear marks become more prominent, creating woven pathways across the page from which distinct, layered shapes emerge. This framed work is one of a pair exhibited in our group show ‘Escape Routes’; their title is taken from a line in a poem called ‘Spring and All’ by William Carlos Williams. Joseph says: ‘often I’m reading these things and making work at the same time and everything comes together naturally. They are really about line creating form instead of form being a solid shape.’

Joseph graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2011 and won the Neville Burston Award for Painting. He continued his studies at the Royal Drawing School where he won The Patrons Club Prize in 2012. He has exhibited in group exhibitions presented by Oliver Projects, Cavaliero Finn, Cob Gallery, and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, all in London. In 2020, his paintings were showcased in a solo exhibition at Sid Motion Gallery, London. Joseph lives and works in south east London.
